Bird Surveys - Volunteers Needed
Rutland County Audubon, on behalf of Vermont Fish and Wildlife, will be undertaking a series of bird surveys in both the Plymsbury Wildlife Management Area and the Tinmouth Channel Wildlife Management Area.
The Plymsbury WMA comprises 1857 acres of six forest types, Norway spruce, aspen/white birch, aspen, beech/birch /maple, spruce and spruce/fir at elevations of 2000 feet and above. However, it is in the lower elevation spruce and spruce/fir that our bird survey efforts will be focused. While all species of birds encountered will be recorded, target species are bay-breasted warbler, Cape May warbler and rusty blackbird. We anticipate that the survey will intercept both migrants and locally nesting birds during the late spring, summer and early fall.
The Tinmouth Channel Wildlife Management Area comprises 1148 acres of northern hardwood, cedar swamp, old field pine, hardwood/softwood, white pine, mixed softwood, open swamp and some open fields. Elevations range from 1100 feet to 1300 feet. There is no target species and all birds throughout the various habitat types will be recorded. At least one canoe trip up the Tinmouth channel will be undertaken. Once again the expectation is to intercept both migrant and locally nesting species.
If you have an interest in participating in one or more of the survey efforts please contact Roy Pilcher at shamwarivt@aol.com or 459-2851 for further information. This is an opportunity to learn, to contribute and to share your passion with fellow birders.
